Former baseball slugger Jose Canseco Jr. has been accused of sexual assault in Las Vegas, in an investigation that the former baseball slugger made public with postings on a social media website claiming that a woman falsely accused him of rape. No arrest was made and police said no charges were immediately filed against the 48-year-old former Oakland Athletics rookie of the year who played for six other teams from 1985 to 2001 and later wrote a tell-all book admitting that he used performance-enhancing steroids. Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. Officer Bill Cassell, a police department spokesman, wouldn't say Wednesday where the alleged attack took place. Word about the investigation became public after Canseco posted information about it on the social media network Twitter. He said Las Vegas police had just left his house. The postings - including the name and workplace of a woman - generated an immediate outcry from others who posted comments deriding Canseco. Some of the information was later removed. The Associated Press does not normally identify possible victims of sexual assault. Attempts to reach Canseco weren't immediately successful. Another Twitter post said he was on his way to the airport to fly Texas, to play with the Fort Worth Cats, an unaffiliated team in the independent United League. Team spokesman Nathan Dwelle confirmed that Canseco was scheduled to play during the team's season home opener on Thursday. "Right now, we're not commenting until we have all the facts,'' Dwelle said. A Canseco spokeswoman, Susan Haber in Los Angeles, said she had no immediate information about the case. Dwelle said Canseco's agent, Jose Melendez, was traveling with Canseco. Melendez didn't immediately respond to a message from AP. Canseco hit 462 career home runs and was a six-time all-star while playing with the Athletics, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. His book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant `Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big,'' was published in 2005. In recent years, Canseco played for various teams in California, Arizona, Mexico and Canada. He declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy last year in Las Vegas, reporting less than $21,000 in assets and almost $1.7 million in liabilities, including more than $500,000 owed to the Internal Revenue Service. He listed a post office box as his address. Attorney Mark Segal, who represented Canseco in the bankruptcy, said the case was discharged and he hasn't spoken with Canseco in several months. Segal said he doesn't know where Canseco lives now.

FC Barcelona’s grip on Brazilian superstar Neymar could be slipping as his current club, Santos, flatly rejected the Catalan giant’s most recent offer to own 100 percent of the player’s rights according to several news outlets. “We’ve examined the offer and have determined that it doesn’t satisfy our conditions. We don’t accept it,” said Odilio Rodriguez, president of Santos, told Globoesporte of Brazil. Reports differ as to how much Barcelona offered, with the range going from $25 to $30 million; a rather lowball figure based on the player’s popularity and skill he has shown in his native Brazil. The news cycle continues running on overdrive to keep abreast of the impending move of Neymar as he has already made it clear that he will make his much anticipated move to Europe over the summer. Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. Barcelona has long been considered to be the favorite to sign the 21-year-old, with both the club and player speaking highly about one another for some time. Just yesterday, there were reports that Neymar had already signed a pre-contract to join Barcelona in July. According to Spain’s Sport, the offer was the second made for the Santos player, with the first figure just under $22 million. Although the two sides appear to be far apart, more negotiations are planned in upcoming days.

Carl Froch: The chance to avenge a defeat is massive

Carl Froch sat down with HBO Sports to talk about his upcoming fight against Mikkel Kessler for the WBA and IBF Super middleweight titles. Froch had the following to say on the his HBO Boxing blog: Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10 For any top class boxer, the chance to avenge a defeat is massive. I don’t lose many fights and neither does Mikkel, but when you do, the first instinct is to see them the next day and fight again. Three years have passed since the defeat in Herning – I wouldn’t say it bothers me every day but to finish my career without the opportunity to face Mikkel again would be tough to swallow. I feel the same about Andre Ward too, but it’s less intense as Mikkel and I are cut from the same cloth – proper fighters who put it all on the line and go toe-to-toe in battle. Does the defeat irritate me? Of course. Do I feel cheated by it? No. When a fight is as good as the first one and you don’t win you are down after the event and you look at things in the fight that perhaps didn’t go your way. But I lost that fight fair and square – I’ve got no problem with the decision and it still remains a pleasure and privilege to have been involved in one of the best fights for a long, long time in both Denmark and in the super middleweight division – but it would have been better if I’d won of course! Physically I’m in fantastic shape. I am a clean liver – I don’t drink or smoke and I don’t really like fast food. I don’t balloon up during fights and that’s obviously a huge advantage as I can concentrate on the fight without worrying about making weight. I’m in a great place mentally too – my little girl Natalia arrived a couple of weeks ago and both baby and Mum, Rachael, are doing great. Her arrival has been perfectly timed as it was a nice distraction from the training and then I refocused and became even more energised. I can understand that people would have this as a pick’em fight as we’re both World class operators with huge power and with punch resistance – it’s the reason why it’s the most hotly anticipated pure boxing match for some time now. I believe I will win, Mikkel believes he will win – Kalle and Nisse Sauerland will think they can come to England and return with two belts, Eddie Hearn knows I am going to win, my fans are coming to cheer me to victory, Mikkel’s fans are travelling over to have a title party in London. My point? Everyone has an opinion because it matters – this fight has captured everyone’s imagination and the pundits down to the casual boxing fan all have their opinions which is fantastic – even though ultimately, only Mikkel and I will decide who takes the glory. I don’t like to look beyond the fight and think ‘what if…?’ as the focus is solely on Mikkel. A defeat would be a bitter pill to swallow and two losses to the same man is tough. The positives are what I am looking at – huge fights with Andre Ward and George Groves are possibilities, and if the second fight is as good as the first, maybe we’ll do it again. It’s round 13 from three years ago. We’ll pick up where we left off and it’s going to be action packed. Like animals, it’s our instinct to fight and that’s just what people are going to get, fireworks. It’s going to be one of those nights that if you are not there and not watching on TV, you are going to regret it as you’ll miss something truly special. CARL FROCH VS. MIKKEL KESSLER II is presented live from the O2 Arena in London, SATURDAY, MAY 25 (6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT), exclusively on HBO. The fight also has a prime-time replay later the same day at 10:00 p.m. (ET/ PT).

Mike Krzyzewski had decided to remain coach of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team. Krzyzewski will try to lead the Americans to a third straight gold medal, a person with knowledge of the decision said Wednesday. Originally expected to step down, Krzyzewski will hold a press conference to confirm his return Thursday at Duke, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. Win a trip to the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier game with Blackberry 10 The Hall of Fame coach has led the Americans since 2005, winning gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 world basketball championship. His return was first reported by Sports Illustrated. Krzyzewski repeatedly said he planned to end his international coaching career following the Americans' victory last summer in London. Yet USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo preferred to hold off any discussion until after Coach K finished his season with the Blue Devils, and he got the answer he wanted. Krzyzewski will lead the Americans next summer at the renamed World Cup of Basketball in Spain, where a victory would qualify them for the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil. The person said there were expected changes to Krzyzewski's staff, which had included NBA coaches Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan, and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.

Jockey Eddie Ahern was banned for 10 years on Wednesday after being found guilty of three breaches of British Horseracing Authority (BHA) rules following a corruption inquiry. The 35-year-old was found guilty of conspiring to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice, intentionally failing to ensure the horse Judgethemoment was ridden on its merits at Lingfield in January 2011 and of passing information for reward, the BHA said in a statement on its website (www.britishhorseracing.com). Former West Bromwich Albion soccer team defender Neil Clement was banned for 15 years and fined 3,000 pounds ($4,500) after being found guilty of conspiring to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice, placing a lay bet on a horse which he then owned and failure to provide phone records to the inquiry. Judgethemoment, ridden by Ahern, finished last of seven runners in a two-mile handicap, having been well clear at the halfway stage. Ahern's explanation was that he misjudged the pace and did not realize he was so far ahead. But the BHA disciplinary panel said it "could not accept that a jockey of Ahern's experience, especially on the all-weather at Lingfield, could have made an error of such an extent". Ahern plans to appeal both the disciplinary panel's findings and the severity of the suspension. ($1 = 0.6647 British pounds) (Writing by Alison Wildey; Editing by Ed Osmond)

Star linebacker Brian Urlacher is calling it a career after 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears. The eight-time Pro Bowl player announced his retirement on his Twitter account Wednesday. In a statement, he said, "After spending a lot of time this spring thinking about my NFL future, I have made a decision to retire." Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. "Although I could continue playing, I'm not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that's up to my standards," he said. "When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear." Urlacher was the face of the Bears' franchise and leaves as one of the game's great linebackers. In March, he and the Bears were unable to reach a contract agreement and he became a free agent. He started 180 games from 2000 through 2012, and recorded a team-record 1,779 tackles. He has 41½ sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He was the AP's defensive player of the year in 2005 and helped the 2006 team to the Super Bowl. Last year, he was slowed by a knee problem and then missed the final four games with a hamstring injury. He had posted pictures on Twitter indicating he was working his way back into shape before the split with the Bears, but when they announced he would not be back, it was hardly a surprise. Urlacher told the team's flagship radio station at the time that he was not shocked and that the offer he received was "more like an ultimatum" in which they were telling him, "Sign this contract or we are going to move on." The split with Urlacher was one of many moves in a busy offseason for the Bears. They fired coach Lovie Smith after a second straight late collapse left them out of the playoffs for the fifth time in six years even though they did finish with 10 wins. They replaced him with the offensive-minded Marc Trestman, hoping he could get the most out of quarterback Jay Cutler, and revamped their offensive line. On defense, the only starting linebacker returning is Lance Briggs. Veteran free agent acquisition D.J. Williams and second-round draft pick Jon Bostic are expected to compete for the middle linebacker job with Urlacher gone. A safety with lightning speed, the 6-foot-4 Urlacher initially lined up at strong side linebacker for the Bears but lost the job to Roosevelt Colvin. He made the switch to middle linebacker during his first season when Barry Minter was injured and went on to become the NFL's defensive rookie of the year, the start of a long run that saw him anchor a defense that consistently ranked among the league's best. But he clearly wasn't his old explosive self last year. The speed and quickness that allowed him to wreak havoc for years simply wasn't there. Urlacher sprained his medial collateral ligament and partially sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the 2011 regular-season finale against Minnesota and hasn't been the same since then. He barely participated in training camp, had an arthroscopic procedure in mid-August to relieve the swelling, and spent most of the season trying to regain his old form. Then, he came up lame in coverage on the second-to-last snap of the Bears' overtime loss to Seattle in early December, an injury that ended his season and, ultimately, his career.

Italian Giovanni Visconti recorded his second stage win of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday to give his Movistar team their third straight victory and their fourth overall in the 2013 race. His compatriot Vincenzo Nibali retained the overall lead as the race reached its crucial final three mountain stages. Visconti, who won the Galibier climb on Sunday, broke away on a minor climb on Wednesday's 17th stage, the Cote de Crosara, with 17 kms to go. Lithuanian Ramunas Navardauskas finished second in the lead group of 39 riders, 19 seconds back, with Slovenian Luka Mezgec in third. "Things couldn't have gone better, this is the first victory of my new career," Visconti said after Movistar's triple run of victories. "I went through a very difficult period in the last year on a personal level, but after winning on the Galibier, everything has changed. "Today to win I needed to be bold to have a chance of victory and believe in myself when I dropped the bunch. Victory on the Galibier gave me that confidence. "There was a time when I was worried that I couldn't show the level of talent I had when I was a young amateur because of personal problems. "After today's win, which was like a one-day race, now I can look at doing something in the Classics and the world championships." The field now tackles three high mountain stages, starting with a 20.6 kms individual uphill time trial on Thursday. Astana rider Nibali heads the overall standings ahead of Australian Cadel Evans with Colombian Rigoberto Uran in third place. "I've taken second and fourth in previous uphill time trials in the Giro, so my reference points are good," Nibali siad. "But if I can get between 30 or 40 seconds on Evans, I'll be satisfied. But Evans is a very tenacious rival, I won't be taking anything for granted tomorrow." (Editing by John Mehaffey)

Sergio Garcia apologized to Tiger Woods for saying he would have "fried chicken" at dinner with his rival, a comment that Woods described as hurtful and inappropriate. "I want to send an unreserved apology. I did not want to offend anyone," Garcia said Wednesday. "My answer was totally stupid and out of place." Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. Garcia was at a European Tour awards dinner Tuesday night when he was jokingly asked if he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open. The two players had been verbally sparring since The Players Championship nearly two weeks ago. "We'll have him round every night," Garcia replied. "We will serve fried chicken." The remark took the golfers' differences into ugly territory, reminiscent of when Fuzzy Zoeller made a similar comment about Woods after he won the 1997 Masters, becoming the first player of black heritage to win a major. "The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate," Woods said in a series of tweets. "I'm confident that there is real regret the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move and talk about golf." For once, both players agreed. Garcia held an impromptu news conference at the BMW PGA Championship to elaborate on a statement he sent out Tuesday night through the European Tour. "I want to also apologize to my Ryder Cup teammates who were there last night for taking the shine away from a wonderful event, and finally and foremost, I want to apologize to Tiger and to anyone I could have offended. I felt very sick about it and feel really bad, and just hope to settle things down and move on." Garcia said he called Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent at Excel Sports, because he doesn't have a phone number for the world's No. 1 player. The Spaniard said his comment about fried chicken was not intended as a racist remark and that he was caught off guard by the question from Golf Channel's Steve Sands. "It was a funny question and I wanted it to be a funny answer in reply," he said. "I started to get a sick feeling straight after the dinner and I felt so bad I thought my heart was going to come out of my body. I felt bad about it all day." Woods was on his way to a record win in the 1997 Masters when Zoeller was talking about his performance and ended by saying, "So you know what you guys do when he gets in here? Pat him on the back, say congratulations, enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Or collard greens, or whatever the hell they serve." The remark followed Zoeller for the rest of his career, and it cost him major endorsements. Garcia's main sponsor is TaylorMade-adidas, which issued a statement Wednesday that his comment "was offensive and in no way aligns with TaylorMade-adidas Golf's values and corporate culture. "We have spoken with Sergio directly and he clearly has regret for his statement and we believe he is sincere," the statement said. "We discussed with Sergio that his comments are clearly out of bounds and we are continuing to review the matter." PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and European Tour chief executive George O'Grady were at the awards dinner Tuesday night. O'Grady said in a statement that he and Finchem spoke to Garcia after his pro-am round at Wentworth. "Sergio expressed very deep and sincere regret for his unguarded and, in his own words, 'stupid' remark and we are also aware of his statement of apology," O'Grady said. "Following our meeting, we have accepted his full apology and we consider the matter closed." PGA Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said the tour would not be commenting on the public feud between two marquee players. Garcia said he hoped this might lead to an improved relationship with Woods. "Like I said before, I am terribly sorry for what happened and I am sure we can talk soon and I can apologize to him face-to-face, and move forward and forget about the whole thing," he said. It's the second time in two years that Woods has been the center of a racially sensitive remark. At an awards night for caddies in Shanghai in November 2011, his former caddie received an award for best TV interview. Steve Williams, who had been fired by Woods in the summer of 2011, was on the bag for Adam Scott when he won at Firestone. Williams said in a CBS interview that it was "the best win of my life." When he received the mock award, Williams said of the interview, "It was my aim to shove it right up that black a------." He apologized to Woods the next week at the Australian Open. Woods didn't surface for weeks after the Zoeller remarks. His absence allowed the incident to mushroom into a major story. With Garcia, he responded the next day on Twitter. They most likely won't see each other until the U.S. Open at Merion in three weeks outside Philadelphia. "They're big names that certainly are attractive to our fans, the demographic that certainly watches the game," Zach Johnson said from the Colonial. "Maybe they add a little bit of drama here and there, and there's nothing wrong with that. I prefer that the drama and entertainment comes on the golf course, in any given week with anybody. "Part of the reason their names have surfaced and will surface in the future is because they're really good," he said. "I hope that continues because they're great for the game."

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Goetze will miss Saturday's Champions League final against Bayern Munich after failing to recover from a hamstring injury, leaving the team without one of its best players. Dortmund confirmed Wednesday that Goetze will not be fit in time to face his future club at Wembley Stadium in London. It would have been the 20-year-old Goetze's last game for Dortmund before his 37-million euro switch to Bayern next season. "The final was my main aim and I fought hard for it in the last weeks," Goetze said on Dortmund's website. Win a trip to the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier game with Blackberry 10 Goetze returned to training on Tuesday but suffered a recurrence of the problems that forced him off in the semifinal second leg against Real Madrid on April 30. After completing an individual jogging exercise in the morning, he broke off training after an hour with teammates in the afternoon. "I'm incredibly sorry that I can't help the team in this important match," Goetze said. "I have full confidence in our team and will of course travel with the side to London to support the lads from the side of the pitch." It will be the second Dortmund final against Bayern that Goetze will have to watch from the sidelines. The attacking midfielder missed most of the second half of last season with a thigh injury and could only watch from the bench as his teammates routed Bayern 5-2 in the German Cup final. Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp will now likely turn to Germany teammate Ilkay Gundogan to take Goetze's position behind Polish striker Robert Lewandowski. "I don't think it's that difficult. I played there in the youth teams and know what's required of the position. I know what I have to do," Gundogan said last week. Klopp also has the option of bringing Marco Reus into the center, where the Germany international played in the 2-1 Bundesliga loss to Hoffenheim last Saturday, with Kevin Grosskreutz coming in on the wing to help left back Marcel Schmelzer cope with Bayern's Arjen Robben and Philipp Lahm.

Jockey Eddie Ahern has been found guilty of three breaches of British Horseracing Authority (BHA) rules following a corruption inquiry. His punishment will be decided later on Wednesday, the BHA said in a statement on its website (www.britishhorseracing.com) Ahern was found guilty of conspiring to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice, intentionally failing to ensure the horse Judgethemoment was ridden on its merits at Lingfield in January 2011 and of passing information for reward. Judgethemoment finished last of seven runners in a two-mile handicap, having been well clear at the halfway stage. Ahern's explanation was that he misjudged the pace and did not realize he was so far ahead. But the BHA disciplinary panel said it "could not accept that a jockey of Ahern's experience, especially on the all-weather at Lingfield, could have made an error of such an extent." Former West Bromwich Albion defender Neil Clement was found guilty of conspiring to commit a corrupt or fraudulent practice, placing a lay bet, on a horse which he then owned and failure to provide phone records to the inquiry.
Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini has announced that he will leave the La Liga side at the end of the season, a club spokesman said on Wednesday. The Chilean has been linked with a move to Premier League Manchester City who are looking for a manager after sacking Roberto Mancini. "Professionally, these are my final hours at Malaga," Pellegrini said at an awards ceremony in the Costa del Sol city, according to local media. "On Sunday, I will take charge of my last match at the Rosaleda. Everyone has the right to follow their own path. I am not leaving because of financial ambition, but because of a sporting project that will allow me to feel fulfilled." Win a trip to the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier game with Blackberry 10 He gave no further details about his future. Malaga are sixth in La Liga and host Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday as they chase a place in the Europa League next season, though they would not be able to take it up unless a UEFA ban, imposed because of delays in payments to creditors, is overturned. Their final game of the season is at Barcelona on June 1. "It's going to be very emotional and we hope to leave the club with a place in European competition," the 59-year-old Pellegrini added. "The agreement with the club has been gratifying and satisfactory." The former Villarreal boss, who joined Malaga after being sacked by Real Madrid in 2010, led the Qatar-owned club to the Champions League quarter-finals in their debut season, where they lost to finalists Borussia Dortmund. Known as 'The Engineer', Pellegrini has had a strained relationship with the club and its owners over their long-term commitment to the project. After an initial investment in playing staff when they took over in 2010, the owners have sold some of their best assets including Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal to Arsenal, and Salomon Rondon to Rubin Kazan. Malaga have appealed against the UEFA one-year European ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and expect to get a ruling early next month.

British media is reporting Tottenham star Gareth Bale is Real Madrid’s main objective this summer, especially if Santos striker Neymar, as it has been reported, ends up signing with Barcelona. According to tabloid Daily Star, the ‘Merengue’ club would offer 50 million euros ($US 65 million) plus a player. Pepe, Higuaín, Di Maria or Marcelo would be the candidates to be included in the transaction. The tabloid says Higuaín would most likely be the chosen one sinceTottenham is looking to strengthen its attack. Win a trip to the USA-Mexico World Cup qualifier game with Blackberry 10 However, the same newspaper has published a declaration from Tottenham's youth coach Tim Sherwood who says Bale will stay at the club next season: "He's fantastically happy at Tottenham… I don't see him banging the door down trying to get a move. I believe one million per cent he will stay," Sherwood said. The ‘Spurs’ failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season and could be finally willing to sell its biggest asset who has been in the radar of Real Madrid and other clubs the last couple seasons. Bale is finishing his best season ever with Tottenham as he has scored 26 goals in all competitions, including 21 in the Premier League. Currently playing his sixth year with the London club, the Welshman recently received a big increase in his salary to an estimated 7.5 million euros per season. Coach Andre Villas-Boas has repeatedly said he will not let the player leave to another club next season.

Two of the most popular teams in Mexican soccer will face off in the Clausura 2013final . America, first place in the regular season table, and Cruz Azul, fifth in the table, arrived without controversy to the liga MX final. Win a trip to a World Cup qualifier between Mexico and the United States Cruz Azul: This is the opportunity they have been waiting for, the best spot to vindicate themselves and end their 16-year title drought is against their bitter rival. The table is served, Cruz Azul has been the best team in the home stretch and hopes to stay stron gin the moment of truth. The Copa Mx final has liberated the side to appease their demons of seasons' lost to America. Now its time for revenge. America: The Aguilas have been doing well themselves. The most hated team in Mexico has the men necessary to end Cruz Azul's run. The team has not won the title since Clausura 2005 when they defeated Tecos 7-4 in the aggregate score. In their favor is home field advantage and the knowledge that they face a rival who has struggled in the big games. America is still searching for its 11th title to draw Chivas with the most. Duel on the bench: Herrera and Vasquez have shown they have the necessary character to make decisions for their teams. 'Piojo' has been laboring long with teams like Atlante and mOnterrey to win teams. Without a title, he will face heavy criticism from fans despite being the best team on paper. Memo Vasquez has already won titles, with Pumas in the league and Cruz Azul in the Copa, and despite not havin gthe same experience he can feel equal with Herrera. Players to watch: Christian Benitez: 'Chucho' was the top scorer of the tournament and Ligulla, with a strong attacking duo with Jimenez. His speed and dynamic with the ball could give America its dream of a title. Christian Gimenez: While Pavone, Barrera and Teofilo have taken off some of the pressure, 'Chaco' is still in charge of dictating play, order and progression for Cruz Azul. Prediction: Terra predicts a heated final, if something has exemplified the teams is that they hold nothing back, they are always willing to attack and look for the win. Without the away goal or position on the table mattering, Cruz Azul has the slight advantage, but America gets to close at home. We believe the champion will be wearing blue.

Puerto Rican banker Richard Carrion launched his bid for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday, with his long financial experience a powerful pitch in his quest for the world's top sports job. The 60-year-old Carrion, who is chairman of Puerto Rican lender Popular Inc, heads the IOC's finance commission and is a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, becomes the third official candidate in the race to be decided on September 10. "We have a lot at stake in this election," Carrion, an IOC member since 1990, told Reuters in a telephone interview. "Our place in the world is not guaranteed. We must have a leader that knows how not just to manage the coming change but also make it work for the IOC and the movement," said the soft-spoken Carrion. IOC Vice Presidents Thomas Bach from Germany and Singapore's Ng Ser Miang have already launched their campaigns while the head of the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) C.K. Wu is set to announce his bid on Thursday. Several more could decide to run, with Swiss sports administrator Denis Oswald and former pole vault champion Sergei Bubka seen as likely candidates. As head of the IOC's finance commission since 2002, Carrion, who is also responsible for negotiating broadcasting rights for the IOC, has overseen major revenue growth over the past decade despite the global economic downturn. He also helped to negotiate a four-Games deal to 2020 with U.S. broadcaster NBC worth $4.38 billion. Sponsorship revenues for the IOC through its TOP program for the 2013-16 period are set to exceed $1 billion for the first time, compared with $663 million for 2001-4. "(IOC) President (Jacques) Rogge has entrusted me with a lot of responsibility, financial and television. It was his vision that we should grow the foundation to have enough money at hand in case Games were cancelled," said Carrion. MOUNTING REVENUES Broadcasting revenues, the biggest source of income for the IOC, are seen topping $4 billion until 2016, with revenues for the 2002-4 period at almost half that. "If you look at the IOC, it has a great standing but by nature when things are going well I think about what could go wrong. This is a great standing but it is not something that is guaranteed," said Carrion. He said he wanted to see the IOC branching out to other organizations to become stronger. "We cannot do everything on our own. We have tremendous resources in the work our members do. We can create associations with other organizations around the world, learn from best practices." In turn, Carrion said he wanted to see Olympic Games expertise brought back into the IOC as the Games became more complex. "We developed an expertise and need to bring this core of people in-house. There are areas in staging Olympics where we would benefit if we had a core of people permanently engaged in host cities," he said. The IOC will elect the winning candidate at their session in Buenos Aires, with all 100-plus IOC members voting. Rogge is stepping down after his two-term presidency comes to a mandatory end. Asked to comment on how he viewed campaigning against close colleagues for one of the most powerful sports jobs in the world that has come up only twice since 1980, Carrion said he thought there would be at least two more candidates appearing before the June 10 deadline. "I think there will probably six candidates and this is a good thing. The more candidates, the more opportunity for members to make the decision who is the most capable person. "Every IOC member is responsible for that legacy and I am convinced the number of candidates is a good thing. We should all have opportunity to share our ideas."
Daniel Paille snapped a tie with 3:31 left in the third period, and the Boston Bruins put the New York Rangers on the brink of elimination with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night. Boston leads the best-of-seven series 3-0 and can advance to the conference finals as early as Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Only three teams in NHL history have rallied from an 0-3 hole to advance. The Bruins trailed 1-0 heading into the third, but defenseman Johnny Boychuk tied it at 3:10 of the period with his fourth of the playoffs. The Rangers hadn't lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4, 2010. Boston thought it had grabbed the lead seconds before Paille actually scored when a shot deflected off the mask of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, popped up in the air and landed on the goal line. Lundqvist couldn't find it before Paille swooped in from behind the net and poked in the puck. Taylor Pyatt had made it 1-0 in the second period for the Rangers, who were outscored 8-4 in two losses at Boston to begin the series. New York had won nine straight games at home, including three in the playoffs against Washington in the first round. Lundqvist was sharp until the third period and finished with 32 saves. Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots in the win. The Rangers again failed to get their power play untracked, failing in both of their chances and dropping to 0-for-10 in the series. New York has only two power-play goals in 38 opportunities during these playoffs. Despite being outshot 14-5 in the second period, the Rangers carried a 1-0 lead into the third. Boychuk was credited with the tying goal after the puck appeared to deflect into the net off Rangers defenseman John Moore. The game turned rougher moments later when New York forward Chris Kreider was struck under his visor by the stick of Boston's Tyler Seguin, who was following through on a shot just inside the blue line. Seguin was then clipped in the exchange by the stick of Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger. Shortly after, Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron had a cut over his eye that left his white jersey bloodstained. No penalties were called on any of the plays. New York took just its second lead of the series 3:53 into the second period when Pyatt deflected in a shot by defenseman Ryan McDonagh that was fired from the blue line shortly after the Rangers' second failed power play of the night expired. New York hasn't lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4, 2010, (86-0-6). The Rangers were 16-0 in those situations during this regular season. Lundqvist was again the reason why. He was especially sharp in the second, making a pad stop on Tyler Seguin 6 1-2 minutes in, stretching across to knock away a drive by rookie defenseman Torey Krug — who scored in each of the first two games of the series — and then bringing the crowd to its feet with a lunging glove snare of Gregory Campbell's slap shot from the left circle with 8:24 remaining. That got the Bruins even in shots (15-15) before they outshot New York 8-1 the rest of the second. The Rangers got off to a sluggish start after losing the opening faceoff, and didn't mount any kind of early surge fueled by the excited home crowd. New York didn't get possession of the puck in the first minute and didn't carry it into the Boston end until 1:35 had elapsed. But the Rangers picked up their play soon after and built a 6-1 edge in shots, including scoring opportunities on Rask. New York earned the first power play of the night, however it was as ineffective as it has been throughout the postseason. Rangers captain Ryan Callahan took what appeared to be an elbow from hulking Bruins captain Zdeno Chara when they came together along the boards deep in the Boston end. Callahan clipped Chara in the face with his stick, causing a cut on the bridge of the defenseman's nose. The tide turned back to the Bruins' favor just before the midway point in the period, starting with a partial breakaway after New York turned over the puck at the Boston blue line. Chris Kelly raced ahead with the puck and was stopped in tight by Lundqvist when he tried a backhanded shot. Shawn Thornton was also denied when he came in alone on Lundqvist with 8:46 left in the period, and Jaromir Jagr couldn't score, either, when he got a pair of whacks at the puck that the New York goalie turned aside. The Bruins' surge gave them an 8-7 edge in shots, but Boston finished the period trailing 11-9. NOTES: A moment of silence was held before the national anthem in honor of the victims of Monday's tornado in Oklahoma. ... Wayne Gretzky and Sting were among the celebrities in the crowd. ... The Rangers didn't yield a power-play chance for the second straight home game. Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10.

What already has been an ugly war of words between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia as of late, got considerably uglier when the Spaniard reportedly made a racist remark in regards to the American on Tuesday night. According to the UK's Guardian, Garcia was asked in jest if he would have Woods over for dinner during the upcoming US Open after their public spat: "We will have him round every night," García said. "We will serve fried chicken." Garcia was at the European Tour's gala players' award dinner when he was asked the question by a reporter and was not asked to explain before he left. Later, through a press statement issued by the European Tour, Garcia apologized: "I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players' Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner." His assertion that the comment was "silly" might not hold water, especially for American audiences, as such characterizations are taken very seriously. Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve," after the latter won the Masters. Earlier in the day, Garcia was asked about the spat Tuesday at the BMW Championship outside London and said he "can't like everybody." He added that there are "people that you connect with" and there are "people that you don't."

Nick Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavaliers have beaten the NBA lottery odds again. The Cavaliers won the lottery for the second time in three years Tuesday, giving them the No. 1 pick for the June 27 draft. Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. Gilbert, owner Dan Gilbert's bowtie-wearing son, was on stage for another the victory. After he won it in 2011, the Cavs used the pick to take eventual Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving. The Orlando Magic fell back one spot to No. 2, while the Washington Wizards vaulted from the No. 8 spot to third. Ten years after winning the lottery that landed them LeBron James, the Cavaliers picked up another opportunity to help speed up the rebuilding process since his departure to Miami in 2010. The potential No. 1 pick this year, Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel, is no James. But he could be a nice addition for the Cavs once he's recovered from a torn ACL — if they keep the pick. Dan Gilbert and the rest of the Cavs entourage — all wearing bowties as well — celebrated their latest victory, which came with 15.6 percent odds after they finished with the NBA's third-worst record at 24-58. Dan Gilbert called Nick, born with Neurofibromatosis (NF), a nerve disorder that causes tumors to grow anywhere in the body at any time, his "hero" after the 2011 win. Nick wore a stern look before this one, saying he expected he was done coming here and that he believed the Cavs would be in the playoffs next season. They got a nice jump on that goal.

Oklahoma City isn't just a place where Thunder star Kevin Durant lives these days. It's home. So as he watched the horrifying images Monday as a tornado ripped through suburban Moore, the emotions came bubbling to the surface and so did the need to help. Durant pledged $1 million for tornado relief through his foundation on Tuesday, eager to help a devastated area begin to rebuild. "As the day went on and I saw the footage and the casualties and the houses being blown away, it was tough to see," said Durant, who was in Minneapolis to watch longtime friend Monica Wright play a preseason game for the Minnesota Lynx. "I call Oklahoma City my home. I go through Moore all the time. It's unfortunate. We're going to come together as a city like we always do and we're going to bounce back." Durant has been in Oklahoma City for five years now, ever since the Seattle SuperSonics moved there in 2008. He's become a fixture in the community, in addition to establishing himself as one of the very best players in the NBA. He said he was hoping to return home Wednesday to try and lift the spirits of an area reeling from the deaths of some two dozen people, including children. "Just to get to the hospital, see some kids," Durant said. "Something. Just something to give some hope. Playing for the Thunder, we mean so much to the state. So many people support us and I just want to go back and support those people." The American Red Cross said the gift from Durant's foundation is meant to match other donations and be an incentive for more people to give. The Thunder also announced a $1 million donation, as did the NBA and players' union. "Our hearts go out to all those affected by the devastation that has occurred within our community this week," Thunder chairman Clay Bennett said in a statement issued by the team. "We are focusing Thunder resources to help where we can in the relief efforts and to support the organizations that are on the ground assisting those affected by this week's storms. Even with so much loss, the strength and resiliency of this community have once again been on display, and we will continue to work together as our community and state recover from this disaster." When Durant initially heard reports of a tornado near Oklahoma City, he didn't pay them much mind. A veteran of the area now, he knows twisters can be a regular occurrence this time of year. It quickly became apparent that this one was different, and Durant could barely watch it all unfold. "It hit so close to home," he said. "It was tough to see." Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. And it made the Thunder's early exit from the playoffs sting that much more. With Russell Westbrook out because of a knee injury, the Thunder were beaten by the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference semifinals, a disappointing finish for a team that advanced to the NBA Finals a year ago. "I wish I could've done a better job for my team to stay in the playoffs because of course basketball and sporting events bring everyone together," Durant said. "It takes your mind off it for a few hours." The Thunder boast one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in the league. Durant averaged 30.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists in the playoffs, but the rest of his teammates struggled to step up and fill Westbrook's void. "There's some part of me wishing I could've played better for my team to stay in the playoffs," Durant said. "Hopefully they get back on their feet. It's so tough. Praying for the families. I'm feeling for them."

Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. "It's a really tough decision and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice I am not fit to compete," Murray said in a statement. "Apologies to the organizers and thanks to everyone for the messages of support. Now my complete focus is on getting back on the court as soon as possible." The French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, starts Sunday. Last week in Rome, Murray took a long injury break early in the second set against Granollers, getting his left thigh and lower back massaged. He seemed pessimistic about his chances of playing in the French Open, the only major in which he hasn't reached the final. "I have an issue with my lower back. It's been an issue for a while," Murray said then. "I want to make sure it goes away. It's been a problem since the end of 2011 but it got bad during last year's clay season. "I would be very surprised if I was playing in Paris." Murray reached the quarterfinals at the French Open last year, falling to David Ferrer, before going on to lose his first Wimbledon final to Roger Federer.
The Charlotte Bobcats want to take a step back in time and restore an old nickname to the city. The National Basketball Association (NBA) team will ask the league's board of governors in July to approve changing the franchise's name to Charlotte Hornets effective with the 2014-15 season, Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said on Tuesday. Charlotte's original NBA team enjoyed sellout crowds as the Hornets between 1988-2002 before then-owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans. With the New Orleans team recently changing its nickname to the Pelicans, Jordan said it was time the Bobcats, who began play as an expansion franchise in 2004, brought back the Hornets' moniker. "We believe that making this change would not only re-establish one of the most recognized brands in sports but would also unify our fan base by bringing together our loyal Bobcats fans with those who have fond memories of our city's NBA predecessor," the Hall of Fame player said in a statement.
For a brief but dazzling spell in the 1970s, New Yorkers fell in love with soccer as Pele and the Cosmos showcased the world's most popular game in a city long dominated by baseball and American football. Now Major League Soccer hopes that a new team, called the New York City Football Club and formed by an alliance of English Premier League club Manchester City and baseball's grandest club the New York Yankees, can not only recapture that excitement but this time, sustain it. "This is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country," said an upbeat MLS commissioner Don Garber on Tuesday. Making it work, though, will require not only smart marketing and good players but, in today's sporting landscape, also the right stadium in the right place and an ability to convince the city's sports fans that MLS truly is major league. Across in New Jersey, the New York Red Bulls, while no flop, have found it hard to attract New Yorkers to take the trip across the Hudson river in big numbers to watch MLS and the new club hopes being inside the five boroughs of the city itself will produce better attendance and interest. While the Cosmos, with the likes of German Franz Beckenbauer and Italian Giorgio Chinaglia, grabbed plenty of attention, they did so in the now defunct North American Soccer League, which quickly collapsed in debt as clubs spent beyond their means on wages for foreign stars. MLS has been at pains to ensure that history does not repeat itself. Their ‘single entity' structure with a tight salary cap, just $2.95 million per team, not only creates a parity so that smaller clubs can compete but also acts as a brake on salary inflation. That has brought stability and allowed clubs to invest in new soccer-specific stadiums and academies but it has had the drawback of limiting the ability of clubs to compete in the global labor market for talent - something that might hamper the new club. UNPRECEDENTED MILLIONS While MLS clubs are allowed to sign three ‘designated players' largely from outside the salary cap, allowing the likes of David Beckham and Thierry Henry to move to the league, the average annual salary in the league is close to a modest $150,000 according to the MLS Players Union. Sheikh Mansour, the billionaire from Abu Dhabi who owns Manchester City, has spent unprecedented millions on players since taking over the club in 2008 but his staff will find a very different ‘transfer market' operates in MLS. "Regarding the salary cap, we know very well the rules of the MLS and we think we can build a winning team within these rules," said Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano. "We're going to make extensive use of our expertise, our knowledge, our people. We have very high-calibre people in Manchester City that have been very successful building winning teams". While the link with City will undoubtedly allow access to a network of scouts and coaches to help the new club, the close association with one particular Premier League club could create some marketing problems. Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10. Premier League clubs, including City's rivals Manchester United, have developed significant fan bases in the United States, including New York, and while they would appear to be a natural core support for the new club, it will be a key task to persuade them they are not supporting an inferior replica of the English team. Former U.S. international Alexi Lalas, who was general manager of the Red Bulls' predecessors the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, believes the new team will be a success but is concerned about the link with the English club being too pronounced. "I do question limiting your market and your customers and having to live up to the ‘mothership' within a league with a salary cap," Lalas told Reuters. "When the compare and contrast with Manchester City occurs, as it inevitably will, they are going to have to say that they are just as good. That is a difficult proposition but that is potentially what they are creating," he added. TOUGH CHALLENGE Finding a location to build a modern stadium will also be a tough challenge - MLS has been working on a possible site in Flushing Meadows but the new franchise owners now say they want to evaluate all their options. While Americans generally may be more convinced of soccer's charms now than ever before, it will still be a battle for the new club to find space in a crowded sports and entertainment market. The New York metropolitan area has two NFL teams, two Major League Baseball teams, two NBA teams and two NHL teams and while the involvement of the most famous of all those franchises - the Yankees - can only help, the new club faces a crowded market. "It is not just completion with sports teams, it is competition for the entertainment dollar, there is so much stuff to do in New York," said Lalas, who also says the team will have to live up to the growing sophistication of a soccer public that is familiar with watching European and South American soccer. "It is a sport that is constantly comparing and contrasting with what happens overseas, it is smart, educated type of soccer audience in New York, they are discerning and they are going to smell if it is authentic right away. Creating that relevancy is the biggest challenge".

Vinny Del Negro is out as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers after their first-round playoff exit. The team said Tuesday he won't be offered a new contract when his current one expires at the end of June. Del Negro had a 128-102 regular-season record in three years with the team. The Clippers made the playoffs the last two seasons, including last year when they advanced to the second round for only the second time since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1984. This season, the Clippers won a franchise-record 56 games, had a 17-game winning streak and won the club's first Pacific Division title before their early playoff exit. They led Memphis 2-0 before losing in six games. All-Star guard Chris Paul becomes a free agent July 1, and the Clippers have said their top priority is to re-sign him.
Mikkel Kessler wrote a blog for HBO Sports for his upcoming fight against Carl Froch on May 25 for the WBA and IBF Super Middleweight titles. Hello fight fans! It´s one week until the big fight in London on HBO and let me tell you one thing, I am ready! I think Froch against me is the most exciting fight in the super-middleweight division. Carl Froch is warrior like me, we are cut from the same cloth. We will both leave it all in the ring again, just like we did three years ago. There will be no pushing, no holding, no head-butting, we will continue where we left it in our brutal first fight three years ago. Carl will come to fight. Carl and I have fought all over the world, I´ve been in Wales, Germany, Australia and the US. That´s what true champions do – take the best fights out there against the best opponents…all over the world. The last time I fought on HBO was when I faced Joe Calzaghe in front of 55.000 fans at Cardiff´s Millennium Stadium. I never got the rematch, although I really wanted it. That is the reason why I give Froch this fight. He came to my place, I won and I promised him we´ll fight again. I am a man of honour and I will stick to my word. It´s only fair to have the rematch in London. The fight sold out in one day – all 18.000 tickets gone in a few hours! That tells you how special the fight in Europe is… We´ve had a great training camp. I have my own gym in Copenhagen. I can do all the training in there. My physical trainer Thomas Macon makes sure I stay in shape all year around. Jimmy Montoya came over in March to do the boxing training. I love Jimmy, he is one of the best trainers in the world. I´ve known him for a long time. He came up with the game plan to beat Froch in the first fight and we have created something special again this time. Beating Froch was very big for me. I had just lost the opening fight of the Super Six tournament and a lot of people were doubting me. But I got in there and proved them all wrong. I remember I was surprised by Froch – he was really tough and he got this long arms…and a lot of power. I caught him with a right in the eighth round but he came right back. The last two rounds were insane, we just fought our hearts out and left it all in there. The sell-out crowd was on their feet and I´ll never forget the feeling when my arm was raised. I want to feel the same again on May 25. It will be a great fight…don´t miss it! Win a trip to US-Mexico qualifier with Blackberry 10 CARL FROCH VS. MIKKEL KESSLER II is presented live from the O2 Arena in London, SATURDAY, MAY 25 (6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT), exclusively on HBO. The fight also has a prime-time replay later the same day at 10:00 p.m. (ET/ PT).
