My year review of Mexican and international soccer
Today I’d like to review the year in soccer, which in particular for Mexico was very positive.
2012 was very good for the Mexican national team. El Tri won its group in the World Cup qualifier, showcasing a good game and logging a perfect record.
The Mexican team is one of the favorites next year in the final hexagonal; however, they should not be too confident. I think we have players with great quality that can punch the ticket to World Cup, but it’s important that there is no overconfidence because they will face difficult rivals.
Without a doubt, the best achievement at the national team level this year was the gold medal the U23 team won in the Olympics. The performance of this group and the result obtained were the product of a great work, and their victory in London is of great importance for soccer in our country.
At the club level in Mexico, I think Tijuana was the best team of the year because of the great tournament it had in the second semester and the title won. There should also be recognition for Leon and Toluca, which also had a good tournament.
We also have to count Santos among the best of the year, which won the first tournament and normally is a protagonist but unfortunately fell greatly in the second semester. I think they lacked of ambition for the Apertura tournament.
What Monterrey did in the CONCACAF Champions League also has merit and they demonstrated the leadership of Mexican teams in the region. However, seeing their performance in the Club World Cup, it is evident that we still have to do a lot to reach a level close to the European clubs.
At the individual level, in my opinion Christian Benitez was the best player in Liga MX this year. The Ecuadorian is a very skilled player and he had two outstanding semesters in which he fought for the goal-scoring title in both tournaments. I’d also like to mention the Colombian Duvier Riascos from Tijuana who had a great second tournament and whose goals were vital for Xolos to win the title.
I also want to talk about America, which I think did not have a good year. Despite reaching the semifinals in both tournaments, the “Aguilas” always have to aim to reach the final and win the championship; any other result is considered a bad one.
In international soccer, Barcelona remains the best in the world. This team has a very comptitive squad that has great players, including Lionel Messi, who I consider the best player this year and the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or.
Before I finish, I’d like to tell you that negotiations with Dorados are on going very well it’s very probable that the next semester I will be playing with the Culican club again, where I have felt very comfortable. I continue therapy to treat the injury I suffered in the final, and my goal is to be recovered by Jan. 6, when the second division tournament begins.
Unitl next week, and remember … eat fruits and vegetables!
