German official will sue Luisao for "assault" in friendly

German referee Christian Fischer will sue the Brazilian defender Luisao, of Benfica, for aggression in the friendly match between the Portuguese club yesterday and Fortuna Düsseldorf, which was caled off after the incident.

Fischer, 42, said he was "appalled" by the attack yesterday and plans to file a criminal charge against the player, reported today the German agency dpa.

The official was unconscoius a few minutes and had to be treated in the locker room after falling to the ground from what he describes as  an "attack"by  the player. The match was interrupted in the 43rd minute and never resumed.

The action came after Fischer showed him the yellow card, followed by a red after a strong foul on the Spaniard Javi Garcia. Luisao made strong contact with the ref who fell immediately to the ground.

The score was tied 0-0 and until then the game ended, with about 22 thousand German fans present.

The President of Fortuna, Peter Frymuth, expressed his astonishment at the behavior of the Brazilian and announcedhe will report the incident to UEFA officials.

Both Luisaoand the Portuguese club say the referee was "acting" and argue that there was no such attack. The video of the incident does not show any definitive contact between Luisao and the official.
