The Spaniards dominated and attacked for almost 20 minutes without response from the Mexicans, they did a good job defensively to prevent Gonzalo Higuain and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo to capitalize on the opportunities they had.

At 13th minute,  the Spanish opened the scoring with a powerful shot from outside the area by Xabi Alonso to the right,.

On the first occasion that led to danger, on a pass from Daniel "Hachita" Luduena from center circle to the Ecuadorian Christian Suarez, , his left-footed shot went to the bottom back of the net for Santos in the 26th minute.

For the second period, the Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho completely changed his initial eleven, to start up front the Frenchman Karim Benzema and Kaka, who took more than Higuain and Christian, who had more individual efforts.

Real Madrid retook the lead on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute s in a random action in a corner kick from the right fell to the back post for Benzema, who crossed his shot to the left, Oswaldo Sanchez was launched to divert but it hit Sammi Khedira in the face first to go in.
