La Comunidad de Madrid has authorized an exceptional modification to the Plan General de Ordenacion Urbana de Madrid (the Urban plan for the city) that will allow Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to be covered, just as Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, had promised.
Florentino Perez had assured the club that if he were reelected, the project to add a roof to the Bernabeu would begin immediately: "Our objective is to begin the construction for the historic remodeling in the Summer of 2013, to extend throughout three seasons," assured the president, implying Madrid would first use the new stadium in 2016.
Regional spokesperson, Salvador Victoria, after the Council of the Madrid Community Government, has announced that this way they can implement alternate uses in the area surrouding Castella path, including new "green areas". This will allow Madrid to "obtain in exchange new terrain for public use in the Opanel neighborhood, which is not currently in use," he commented.
The changes in the use of the land also fall into play for the remodeling of the stadium and signal that the reconstruction could start as planned if Florentino is reelected.
